Kate Makes a Rare Fashion Misstep in Bespoke Emilia Wickstead

Thousands crowded the Royal Mile to catch a glimpse of William and Kate also known as the Earl and Countess of Strathearn while in Scotland.

The Royal Couple joined the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Princess Royal at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh for the installation of The Prince William as a Knight of the Thistle.

The Order of the Thistle is the highest honour in Scotland and is second only in precedence in the UK to the Order of the Garter. It honours men and women who have held public office or who have contributed in a significant way to national life.

This was Kate’s first public appearance as the Countess of Strathearn. She chose a soft yellow-gold coat dress by designer Emilia Wickstead.

The Duchess’ dress (£1,200) was made especially for her. According to Grazia Daily the coat dress is not from a specific season, but the yellow-gold raffia fabric was featured prominently in the Spring Summer 2012 collection. They also tell us that a dress like this takes about 6 weeks to complete.

In my opinion, this was Kate’s first fashion misstep since her wedding! The cut of the coat dress was not youthful like others she has worn. This one was suited for a woman in her 50’s and 60s’. The dress also needed a belt to finish off the look and accentuate her tiny waistline. Maybe one that matched her clutch and shoes. Her hat, one of my favorites, did not look quite right with the dress. The colors were off.

In her hands Kate carried a Strathearn tartan scarf – a nod to her Scottish title and a chocolate brown clutch by British designer Emmy Scartfield of Emmy Shoes.

Completing her look, Kate chose matching chocolate brown suede shoes also by Emmy, a latte hat by Whiteley (£99), and seen numerous times before.

The Duchess’ jewelry was kept simple with just her Kiki McDonough citrine drop earrings and her gorgeous diamond and sapphire engagement ring.
