Following a short reception, Kate went to the school’s nursery where she was presented with a baby gift of a willow tree and a card entitled ‘What Does A Princess Do?,’ that younger pupils had made especially for her visit. Then she was given a shovel to plant a willow tree for the school.

The Duchess opted to wear a summery, silk crepe ‘Sophia’ dress by Erdem (£1248). It’s rare to see Kate choosing such a bold print. The demure, knee-length dress featured Erdem’s signature ‘Visconti-bloom’ print, elbow-length sleeves, and a square neckline.

The ‘Sophia’ dress is available on Net-A-Porter, Matches Fashion and Bergdorf Goodman.

In my opinion, I think this dress was a rare miss for Kate. I may be in the minority but it looked like a dress that could be worn to a luau or on a tropical island vacation.

The Duchess topped off the look with a pair of blue bespoke Alexander McQueen suede heels, a matching Stuart Weitzman navy suede Muse clutch, the Asprey 167 Button pendant and her Annoushka Pearl Drop Earrings (£1,090). She left her glossy hair loose and bouncy.

Kate Unveils her First Official Portrait

The first official portrait of the Duchess of Cambridge was unveiled this morning at London’s National Portrait Gallery.

The painting was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery and, following Kate’s suggestion, it depicts her natural, not official, persona. Award-winning artist Paul Emsley created the large head and shoulders painting of the duchess set against his trademark dark background.

William and Kate received a private viewing of the painting this morning before it went on display to the public. The couple spent 10 minutes looking at the portrait and then met Emsley, his wife Susanne and daughter Marie.

Among the guests were Kate’s parents Carole and Michael Middleton and her brother and sister Pippa and James.

Kate shopped her closet and wore her burgundy Whistles ‘Sofie Rae’ dress (Autumn 2011) with a black velvet belt. She last wore this dress under the unnamed, burgundy coat by an independent British designer when she visited Newcastle in October of last year.

The ‘Sofie Rae’ is a stunning pure silk dress from Whistles ($135 and no longer available) in a warm seasonal burgundy, with a deep v-neckline, long sleeves and a flattering defined waist. Elegant and versatile, with a floating midi skirt and removable belt.

Completing her outfit, the Duchess wore black suede Episode ‘Angel’ heels, her ufo black clutch, her Asprey 167 Button Pendant and her bespoke Kiki McDonough green amethyst and diamond drop earrings.

Additional Information About Kate’s Portrait & the Artist

The portrait is an oil on canvas and bigger than life size 1152 x 965 (45 3/8 x 38).

Paul Emsley is a Glasgow-born, South African-raised painter. Kate sat for Emsley in two sittings last May and June. The first was at Kensington Palace and the second at his studio in Bradford-upon-Avon in southwest England. He worked from photographs spent 3½ months creating the painting.

Odds & Ends

On Wednesday, January 9th, Kate celebrated her 31st birthday. She attended a London showing of Cirque du Soleil with William, her sister Pippa, brother James, and parents Carole and Michael Middleton.

Kate Makes Solo Appearance at Lucien Freud Exhibit

Tonight, Kate made a solo appearance at London’s National Portrait Gallery. She attended a private viewing of Lucian Freud Portraits. This is a new exhibit of works by the famous late British painter.
The exhibition officially opens to the general public tomorrow and features 130 artworks spanning the length of Freud’s painting career from the early 1940s until his final, unfinished work.
The Duchess, recently became a patron of the National Portrait Gallery. The cause is close to her heart as she studied art history at St. Andrews University (where she met her prince).
Kate was greeted by Freud’s daughter Esther and Sir Paul McCartney’s daughter Mary. Jeremy Hunt, the Culture Secretary, and Sandy Nairne, director of the gallery, also joined her on an hour-long tour.
The Duchess of Cambridge wore a grey tweed, double-breasted, 1950s-style frock by the high street clothing label Jesire. The dress had a full skirt with a wide black belt cinching her waist and over sized shawl collar.
Despite the cold weather, she went sans stockings but accessorized with her Jimmy Choo ‘Cosmic’ ( £435) black suede platform heels, a black clutch, a diamond bracelet & matching earrings, and her Asprey Pendant.
Update 2/10/2012
I have been frantically searching for more info on Jesire. There wasn’t much out there but I did find two articles that I’d like to share.
1) Grazia www.graziadaily.co.uk/ reports that Jesire is out of business. The brand was stocked in stores like John Lewis and House of Fraser.
2) Express www.express.co.uk/ reports that the high street brand officially closed it’s doors in November 2011. The former managing director of Jesire, Martyn Vines, is planning talks with the original creator of the Jesire coat dress to possibly re-issue it.
It is thought that Kate bought the £169 dress as far back as autumn 2010 at Peter Jones in London’s Sloane Square.

Thanks to Copykate on Ebay, Kate’s belt has been ‘found’ but not ID’ed because it does not have a brand name anywhere on it.

Additional details about the belt from Copykate:

‘Material: Leather, metal and high quality smooth-finish elastic woven raffia-like fabric. Front metal clasp fastening
Unbranded’

Note: The b80’s style belt listed by Copykate is not the same color that Kate wore in the pictures above. My thoughts are that it could have been borrowed from Carol Middleton?
